Penrose Antiques - A very rare and possibly unique Swansea and documented Swansea Chinaman pattern spill vase in polychrome enamels with a dancing Chinaman against a backdrop of an exotic island, all on a white ground further decorated with gilt seaweed tendrils, c1816. The vase is illustrated in the recently published text in "Swansea and Nantgarw Porcelains: A Scientific Reappraisal" by Howell G. M. Edwards, Springer 2017, pp 176-177. Dimensions, 4 inches (10.2cm) high and 3.5 inches (8.9cm) inches wide at it's widest point. Priced at £2,500.

ABOUT THIS FAIR:

The Pavilions of Harrogate Decorative Antiques & Art Fair, 4-6 May 2018 is the second of 3 editions of the fair organised by Cooper Events Ltd at this well appointed event in the Spa town of Harrogate which has become something of a hub for antiques fairs in the past few years with a number of varied events from showground to smart stand fitted events.The Pavilions of Harrogate event is now the largest of the prestige fairs of its kind in Yorkshire.

The Spring edition has attracted some celebrated northern galleries and dealers including Sutcliffe Galleries from Harrogate promise paintings by local artists, old and new,and Ellis Fine Art.

Other eminent galleirs include Rowles Fine Art from Ludlow, with landscape works and 20th century artists including L.S.Lowry, new to the fair The Soden Collection, Shrewsbury, Contemporary, Modern British Art & Sculpture including well established local artwork alongside renowned British & international artists such as LS Lowry, David Hockney, Francios Gall & Lucien Pissarro. Plus a extensive range of abstract and modern paintings such as Edmond Griffiths-Jones, George Morton-Clark & Mark Payneand Granta Fine Art from Cambridge with paintings by post-Impressionist and Modern European artists.

In other collecting fields will be Solo Antiques, specialising in glass and sculpture from the Decorative Arts period; Garrett & Hurst with 19th and 20th century bronze sculpture; Lakes Boxes, with fine antique boxes; John Newton Antiques with 19th and 20th century traditional and studio ceramics; Jack Shaw & Co, specialising in fine period silver. Jewellers include Plaza and Shapiro & Co and 20th Century Glamour with Mid Century designer jewellery and accessories. Roger De Ville with early English pottery; and Brian Ashbee from Bristol with a wide range of ceramics and small furniture. New exhibitor Penrose Antiques, specialists in 18th and 19th century ceramics including Worcester, Newhall, A.E. Kealing, Derby, Swansea and Nantgarw, will be showing a rare Swansea Chinaman pattern spill vase - shown above.

Furniture dealers include Elaine Phillips Antiques from Harrogate making a debut at this fair and Mark Buckley Antiques from Yorkshire. Adding some decorative flair will be local dealer Chris Holmes Antiques from Harrogate.

Elaine Phillips Antiques - Pair of 18th century French Chairs with needlework upholstery. Priced at £1,850.

WHY YOU SHOULD VISIT THIS FAIR:

York antique dealer Bob Copley will be showing an extremely rare and important collection of Chinese snuff bottles including one made from tangerine peel.  The collection comprises some forty 19th century Chinese snuff bottles includes examples in glass, jade, quartz, porcelain, amber and, most extraordinarily, the dried skin of a tangerine. These miniature bottle shaped flasks were made for the Chinese court and popular use during the Qing Dynasty. Snuff bottles are small, made as accoutrements for a pocket or silk pouch attached to robes, ready for immediate use. They formed an essential part of everyday life and were also objects to be admired. Bob Copley’s collection will be for sale, with items from £250 to £5,000 for the rarest. Bob Copley is a member of The International Chinese Snuff Bottle Society based in USA.
