John Maddison - Kelmscott, Distemper on linen, 47 x 40 inches

Maddison was born in 1952, and read art history at university, going on to become a lecturer in medieval art, and then an architectural advisor to the Victorian Society and a regional representative to the National Trust.  His life and the broad range of Western and European influences throughout his career form the basis for his work today.

Much of the work centres around the medieval city of Norwich, with historical landmarks such as Pull’s Ferry and Bishop’s Bridge. His interiors works are inspired by an old house he recently moved into, just outside the City walls.

His exhibition includes five or six large canvasses using distemper paints, with which Maddison is currently experimenting. Distemper paints were fashionable around the early C20th, particularly with French post-impressionist painters Vuillard and Bonnard, and Maddison finds this technique an effective and durable method of painting.

Also included in the exhibition is an oil painting of Kelmscott Manor, the Cotswolds retreat of William and Mary Morris. Maddison is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London who own the inspirational property, and the work exhibits Maddison's talent for capturing atmosphere through careful observation of the effects of light.
