Hemswell Antiques 1940s weekend

Thousands of people descended on Hemswell Antique Centres near Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, over the weekend of 21 -22 July 2018 to enjoy the sights and sounds of a host of events in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force.

Europe's largest antique centre, Hemswell Antiques, was transported back to the 1940s as staff, traders and visitors donned WW2 era clothing to create an authentic period atmosphere.

The antique centres stand on a site which has a proud association with the RAF which began during WW1 and continued into the 1960s and thousands of pounds worth of raffle prizes had been donated to raise money for the RAF100 charity appeal, which is a joint venture between the air force and four RAF charities.

An aviation themed auction and the cakes from a Bomber County Bake Off novelty cake competition were auctioned off for the charity too.

It is anticipated that the event will have raised more than £2,500, although the final total is still being counted.

The weekend was filled with nostalgia and many dressed for the occasion.

Mr Robert Miller, managing director of Hemswell Antique Centres, said the idea to stage the weekend had come from dealers who trade from the four buildings which make up Hemswell Antique Centres.

Pitches and cabinets across the site were decorated with 1940s and RAF themed collectables.
