The best guide to multi-day antiques fairs in Britain 2008 |
||||
| Every year thousands
of events in the UK are announced that may be of interest to antiques
dealers and serious collectors. The number is great but the exact total
is difficult to give. It is equally difficult to know what to recommend. It all depends on where you draw the line between an antiques fair and a bric-a-brac market. Titles given to events at the bottom end of the market are often none too clear. It is not until one arrives that it is possible to determine exactly what is on offer. These imprecise descriptions of events are particularly difficult for visiting buyers from overseas. It is one-day events in obscure village halls and sports centres that are most puzzling when deciding whether the journey is really worthwhile. Also their dates and venues have a habit of changing without notification to diary editors. Generally speaking a multi-day antiques fair at a well-known international exhibition centre, or leading provincial hotel or country house, is likely to be a show worthy of serious attention, as are grassroot bargains. These are the criteria for the majority of our recommendations. We know that our newspaper has a busy, serious readership. In consequence our listings are based on quality rather than quantity. Whilst every endeavour is made to keep our calendar up to date, a telephone call to the organiser a few days prior to making a special journey is always advisable. Happy antique hunting! |
