The
Registration Mark illustrated below was used between 1842 and
1883 on items made of porcelain and pottery, glass, various
metals and certain woods, in order to curb the widespread
piracy of designs which, up to that time, had caused a great
deal of loss to the producers.
The following information and tables enable
the exact date of manufacture to be ascertained of any item
bearing this registration mark. The Roman figures I, II, III
or IV in the top circle indicate the class of goods.
From 1843-1868. The top letter
immediately underneath the top circle gives the year of
manufacture according to the list below. The letter on the
left side opposite to the RD mark gives the
month of manufacture, whilst the actual day in the month is
shown on the right-hand side. The remaining figure at the
bottom indicates the manufacturer; although many pieces also
bear their own trade mark or stamp.
From 1868-1883. The positioning of
the indication letters was altered as follows: The year of
manufacture is shown in the right-hand corner, the month in
the bottom corner and the day of the month in the top corner
underneath the circle. The manufacturer's number is shown in
the left-hand corner. |
